Cosmetology Is A Challenging Career - 983 Words

You spend hours studying for tests, quizzes, and State Boards. You work your hardest to learn every aspect of Cosmetology. You spend a total of 1,500 hours on your career--hours of hands-on activity and hours of staring at a book while you mindlessly try to take in all the information being taught. You have to be passionate about Cosmetology in order to make it. You have to be open to criticism and harsh judgement. You have to accept that practice makes perfect. Cosmetology is a challenging career, and most people think you cannot make money off of this career. With time and management, cosmetologists can make a profit through their profession. Many people disagree that cosmetologists can make money off of their career. People believe that it is hard to build up a clientele in a small town because clients are normally loyal to their stylists. On top of trying to build up clientele, a cosmetologist would have to pay booth rent. Booth rent is reserving a spot in a salon by paying a fee every week or every two weeks. This cost can range anywhere from $50-$400 per week (â€Å"How Much Does†). Cosmetologists also have to pay for the products they use, therefore, it is argued that they do not make profit. In small towns, prices appear to be lower than what might be found in a bigger city. These reasons are why many people argue that cosmetologists cannot make a profit. It is now necessary to consider what might constitute a grave sin. Certainly any action contrary to Christian teaching of the time would constitute sin. Money. Entreprenuers get into the game because there is potentuial to make lots of money. Money is the main motivator for most entreprenuers. However there are a lot of people who venture into the entrepreneurial field only to be discouraged and leave it. There is a correlation between a good idea and timing. There are countless people who can be used as examples of how great timing coupled with a good idea can translate into money for most people (Ledwith, Coughlan, Bessant, 2009). Entrepreneurship offers flexibility for those who are tired of the demands of traditional work. Working long hours, and being stuck in the same old rut of responsibilities become things of the past. Once a day this tree would drop a baby out from the top of the tree. This tree was Gods tree and he created all humans to look exactly like him, so the humans could rule the world. The human had a head, two arms, and two legs. After a year there were 365 humans on Earth. The humans sacrificed the weak humans to God. In return God created an animal tree. Once a day the animal tree would drop two animals, a male and a female of a species. The humans were at the top of the food chain, but they got along and helped the animals whenever they needed something so they species would not go extinct. The humans and the world started to become more evolving. The population Just keeps increasing so they humans had to come up with a new food source so they decided they needed to have some vegetation. The humans became able to plant crops, but they had nothing to give the plants energy to grow so God created the sun and the oceans for energy. Then God made the moon so the animals and the humans could see at night. The moon helped the animals watch for predators sneaking up on them while it was dark outside. One day Gods tree dropped a human named Robert. Robert was different from the rest of the humans. None of the humans wanted to be around Robert. They all started picking on Robert, and calling him names. Then when Robert was alone he started killing all the animals he could. The he used a bone out of a buffalo that he killed and made it into an axe. Robert so mad at all the humans he went to Gods tree and chopped the tree in half. Then the humans realized what he done and tried to plant each half of the tree. Each half of the tree grew, but there was one problem. One half of Gods tree made good people and the other half of the tree made evil people. There became a war between the evil and the good and they started to kill each other. God was tired of all the fighting so he made mountains between the good and the bad to settle the war and make peace. From there on the good people lived on one side of the planet and the evil lived on the other side. There was no more trouble from there and everybody lived happily ever after. Why should you trust me?I was my Junior Class President and Student Government President my senior year, so I know what it takes to get there. In this article, I've outlined every step you need to take to become class president: starting with just getting on student council freshman year, all the way through running ina big election as a senior. Why Do You Want to Be Class President? Before I talk about how to get elected, I want youto think about why you want to become class president. Do you want to improve school dances? If you're having trouble, sit down and brainstorm. Think about all the events your student government plans. Which did you attend? Were there issues at these events? What could have been done better? If you don't come up with one slogan and instead use multiple slogans or designs, peoplemay get confused. You want one good slogan that you'll use across all of your material to ensure a clear, focused campaign that'll create name recognition. Some micronucleus divide with spindles fibers while others divide without spindle fibers. The intramacronuclear microtubules shape array directed parallel to the axis of macronuclear elongation in amitosis (Williams & Williams, 1976). Macronuclear elongates along with the elongation intramacronuclear microtubules. The elongated macronucleus can enlarge the length of the cell borders through cytoplamic microtubules. Or I communicate with those worlds which come to my world. As far as my vision in interaction with other cultures is concerned, the most intense memory is a 16th century painting by van Brueghel Jr. called The Triumph of Death. It shows Death and all that it stands for coming in overwhelming quantity, torturing and killing masses of people in insane laughter. I saw this picture when I was 7 for the first time and since then I have been returning to it, wondering what event could have led the author to create this dreadful masterpiece. I have seen many similar and even much better artistic works since I saw The Triumph of Death for the first time, but with the help of this particular work I realized that Art is all about making an image of and perceiving different worlds inhabited by different people. Music. This is the first thing that comes to my mind when hearing and other cultures are mentioned. I remember one summer night, when there were about 20 people sitting around a fire and everyone held an instrument. Most of those were people I did not know, but at that moment I felt strong mutual unity powered by tribal beats of bongos of all sizes. Carrion Comfort by Gerard Manley Hopkins Gerard Manley Hopkins was a talented poet, and he was also extremely devoted to his faith. He used his poetry as an avenue in which to express his love and praise to his Creator, and many of his poems are beautiful hymns of adoration. â€Å"Carrion Comfort,† however, is one of his â€Å"terrible sonnets.† Hopkins not only wrote about the beautiful part of faith, but also the questioning and suffering that inevitably comes during a person’s spiritual journey. The Petrarchan or Italian sonnet was one of Hopkins’s favorite forms of poetry and one that he employed frequently in his writing. Hopkins enjoyed the fusion of form and content, and the structure of an Italian sonnet perfectly lends itself to such a synthesis. An Italian sonnet is divided into two parts, the octave and the sestet. The first eight lines have an ABBAABBA rhyme scheme and the sestet concludes with CDCDCD. The content of an Italian sonnet is very specifically and thematically organized as is the content of Hopkins’s â€Å"Carrion Comfort.† The octave is divided into two quatrains, which present and then develop, respectively, a problem or situation on which the poem focuses. The sestet relates the answer or solution to the problem. The transition between the two sections of the poem can be easily identified through dramatic punctuation, or a distinct change in tone. The octave in â€Å"Carrion Comfort† powerfully illustrates intense s uffering and despair experienced by the speaker. Hopkins masterfully depicts the transformation from the utter despair caused by this suffering to hope and reconciliation with God as he makes a transition into the sestet. Arctic Survival – From Success to Failure Contrary to the outcome exhibited by most other groups during the Arctic Survival exercise, our team score (34) was lower than my individual score (64). In our case, our group dynamics were such that we did not effectively utilize the resources we had, and consequently pooled a very limited amount of information. Rather than minimizing our risk, we increased it. I attribute much of our group’s failure at th is simulation to process loss, which is defined as the problems that arise from lack of effective coordination among group members.A number of factors at play could explain the process loss which led to our counterintuitive results. First and foremost, one must consider the way in which group dynamics impact the overall productivity of group collaboration. Our team consisted of K, R, W, J and myself. K and W were quite opinionated, and in contrast, both R and J were quiet – I did not have a sense of what their true opinions were. K dominated the group by putting forth an idea and adhering to that idea in spite of other opinions. Both K and W were vocal in reiterating what they thought were the most important elements of survival.In our case, we took no measures to counteract the impact of clashing personalities. Subsequently, a lack of civil discussion led to uncoordinated efforts with regards to how we should begin to approach a systematic analysis of the situation. An effec tive manager, however, should be skilled at identifying employee team dynamics and personalities; in order to maximize potential, the manager must have the emotional intelligence (that is, the ability to perceive, decipher, use, and pinpoint emotions accurately) to understand how team members differ with respect to emotions, motivation, perspectives, experience, and intentions.For example, though J was quiet and rarely spoke up or defended her ratings, I knew of J’s work ethic from class and understood that it was not as though she avoided work or pulling her weight. In other words, I recognized that her behavior was not attributed to social loafing, but to some other phenomenon. In this case, our group members seemed to exhibit varying levels of psychological safety, which is the belief that little to no risk exists in a particular group environment, and consequently each member feels free to contribute their true thoughts. I presumed that J and R did not feel psychologicall y safe.Anytime a group member disagreed and pressed them to argue for their position, they wavered and complied, indicating that they felt uncomfortable in taking a risk and voicing dissenting views. Their low psychological safety led to an apparent mode of groupthink, in which R and J preferred unanimity in the group over their perceived accurate valuations of arctic survival tools. Similar to the Asch experiment in which a dissenter purposely responded with the wrong answer regarding which stick length was equal, R and J were often silent even though their scores later revealed that their ranking of the rope was more in line with the ideal.Indeed, both R and J, but particularly J, demonstrated a primary symptom of groupthink by censoring herself and failing to communicate her unique viewpoints. Managing a group of people requires careful consideration of the group dynamics in play, paying close attention to symptoms of groupthink and low psychological safety which might lead to pr ocess loss. A manager must use his or her emotional intelligence and leverage group members’ differing perspectives.In doing so, team members will not fall victim to process loss, but will instead pool resources and elaborate on them, thereby facilitating healthy debate and a better end result than one could achieve on his or her own. In addition to identifying how team members differ with respect to emotions, motivation, perspectives, experience, and intentions, a manager must be cautious about his or her own actions and biases. While being confident and resolute is often positive, it can also blind a manager or group member to other valid viewpoints.Many fall victim to commitment and consistency, which is the tendency for individuals to adhere very strongly to a course of action because they feel pressure to act in line with their original declared commitments. Indeed, K exhibited strong commitment and consistency to certain declarations and did not back down. In particular , he was quite stubborn in his opinion that rope was the second most important asset for survival behind matches. When pressed to explain his case, his justifications were vague; yet, he was very insistent.I mentioned, for example, that rope was not necessary in killing prey for food (in comparison to the hand ax), and challenged him to elaborate on his view. He tried to reason by convincing me that rope was the better choice, but ultimately did a poor job at elaborating. The more we debated, the more steadfast he became – he had committed to a course of action, ranking the rope highly, and felt the pressure to follow through. He couldn’t back down now. Rather than counteracting my challenge that a hand ax was more important, he simply offered that he did not agree without any explanation as to why.What’s more, he did not listen to the ways in which an alternative solution might be better (in this case, the hand ax), but instead disregarded my perspective and st ood firm that the rope was more crucial to survival, thus confirming his previous beliefs. He defended his position and avoided information that potentially proved his theory wrong. Not only does this exemplify commitment and consistency, but also confirmation bias, which is an individual’s tendency to disregard information that would contradict his or her views and instead only focus on those explanations that confirm them.K’s adherence was convincing to W, who soon after agreed with his valuation of the rope. W’s support coupled with the others group members’ lack of any objections whatsoever throughout the simulation led to my almost immediate compliance on the subject matter. I let them have the rope, and they let me have the hand ax to follow. The next point of contention was the canvas. Though they all agreed that the hand ax was important, they did not believe the canvas to be significant. I was the only obstacle who expressed a different opinion.K and W’s mutual agreement coupled with R and J’s silence, seemed to bolster their insistence that the canvas was unnecessary. Eventually, J broke the silence and agreed with K and W. J was more likely to feel as though the canvas was insignificant given K and W’s dominant opinion regarding the matter. Once again, I succumbed and agreed to rank the canvas lower down. Though I certainly did not consider myself a manager in this simulation, it allowed me to reflect on my own dealings within a group context and as a potential manager.I was aware of the group dynamics and recognized the limitations that commitment and consistency, social proofing, confirmation bias, and groupthink provided, but also knew that likeability was a key strategy for influencing others. I prodded R and J to offer more insight, but my efforts often fell short. Rather than taking any methodical approach, K and W would dominate conversation, and I assumed the role of mediator, trying to compro mise between all perspectives. I could not claim to have expert power, but perhaps I could convince the group that we should take a more systematic and methodical approach to analyzing this situation.Unfortunately, my efforts probably provided more harm than good. I used reciprocity by telling K and W that he could have rope, if I could have the hand ax next. We continued to negotiate – W could have navigation guide next if the canvas could follow shortly after. The simulation consisted of many exchanges such as these. Reciprocity, which is the tendency for members to agree to a course of action of an individual who has done them a favor, miserably backfired in our case.Not only did group members (myself included) interrupt each other and fail to exert any sort of coordination, but my attempt to give everyone what they wanted eventually led to a higher valuation of the navigation guide. I should have known that R and J were easily persuaded and would not speak up about this u nwise decision, and yet I went through with it. In an effort to gain support through likeability and reciprocity, I sacrificed an effective decision-making process that would have led to a higher probability of success.Group collaboration is typically expected to prevail in this simulation due to pooling of resources and elaboration of material, and in retrospect, our group did a poor job of doing so; framed this way, it is not surprising that our outcome was the exact opposite of the simulation’s intended effect. Though only a simulation, the Arctic Survival exercise certainly illuminated the various ways in which I could be susceptible to ineffective managing. These models and concepts are not simply applicable to this and other simulations, but also provide insight into my potential downfalls.Perhaps it is necessary to assign a devil’s advocate to the group so that teams are not victimized by groupthink; instead a concerted effort to have varying opinions would insp ire thoughtful debate and ultimately more effective outcomes. Likeability is an important weapon of influence, but should not come at the expense of sound decisions – a manager must always exhibit a healthy balance of likeability and firm consideration of all the options. I must be cognizant of my team members and make sure to harness each individual’s strengths, going to great lengths to avoid the common pitfalls exhibited in this simulation.
